After months of waiting, In October last year, I finally received my Beetlejuice Tarot Deck, and I can say it was worth the wait! The author and artist is clearly a fan, and every single card is a tribute and easter egg to the original movie. I also looked up the author Casey Gilly, and discovered they were also the author behind another favourite of mine, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer deck. It meant I had high expectations because they did such a great job with that deck, and they didn't disappoint.
So let's get right to the unboxing. The box is made of thick stock with a shiny feel. It is a lift-off lid that reveals the guidebook and the cards inside. The cards themselves are the size you would expect (just a bit bigger than playing cards) however they are made of quite a thick stock which looks like they have a matte finish (but feels quite smooth). It is this thickness that makes the cards a bit difficult to handle and shuffle. I also find the cards stick together and are a bit harder to bend (I am not amazing at shuffling so I need a bit of movement with cards). Basically, it takes a little bit to 'wear' this deck in. It is well worth it, though because this deck is a lot of fun!
The Major Arcana is something I think makes or breaks a deck. When I look at some of the choices, I want to clap and say "YES!" when I see who has been selected to play the role of The Fool or The High Priestess. I don't think anyone is going to argue with the choice of the Maitlands as the Lovers, and the artwork used on this card just makes me squeal internally with delight. In fact so many of the choices are just perfect in what is really such a hard decision. While the author would know which character they want to fit which role, how do you decide which scene depicts that? It is easy for someone to sit back and be critical, but I can't imagine how hard this would have been to put together, especially given the expectations from the 'cult' fans of the movie. I think they have done a pretty good job, and I found myself looking at each card with a smile. Knowing the movie so well and having a pretty good understanding of the Major Arcana, I didn't really need to refer to the guidebook (which I will get to later), but it is there and worth the read to see how the character has been interwoven into what Tarot is .... The Fool's journey.
The first thing that stood out to me when I looked at the cards was that even the Minor Arcana has special artwork dedicated to a character or scene in the movie. The reason I highlight this is because a lot of pop culture decks only focus on the Major Arcana and don't do much with the rest. Some get really lazy and just show a drawing of a number of swords or wands. In this case, they have chosen iconic and recognisable scenes from the movie. This movie is so iconic that even someone who has seen the movies just a few times will easily recognise the scenes. Based on this, it is really easy to form a connection with the cards and even form your own understanding or interpretation, which can help when you do your readings. I personally struggle with the Minor Arcana (especially wands) so this really helps with my readings.
It is the Guide Book that I feel lets this deck down. Instead of being a flip-through book like most other decks have, this has a hard cover on the front and back, yet the middle pages are made of paper stock that folds out into a big sheet. I am not quite sure why it would have been done this way. The only comparison I can think of is the windy halls of the underworld offices? I could be stretching, but that is the chaos I compare it to. I personally don't like it because it is really awkward and takes a bit to find the card you are looking for. The meanings themselves are straight to the point, intertwining the image from the movie with the actual meaning of the card, giving the guidance you need.
Overall, this is a really fun deck and I recommend it to anyone who loves Beetlejuice. It of course, meets all the criteria and quality to become a much loved collectable, but also worthy to be a deck you read with daily as well. I often bring it out for friends who want a reading, and they love looking at the cards, and it makes the experience all the more fun. Beetlejuice doesn't take itself seriously, and this tarot companion doesn't either in all the right ways. While I wish the guidebook was done differently, it definitely is right up there as one of my favourite decks in my collection!
