Tarot Cards to get excited about in 2025

I have been looking through the current and up and coming Tarot deck releases and this is what I am looking forward to this year!

If you follow my page, you know that I am a big enthusiast when it comes to Tarot.  I collect anything and everything Tarot while I am also learning to read for myself.  I am not a professional Tarot reader or anything like that, I am just someone who appreciates the self-reflection that comes with Tarot and how it often combines with pop culture or themes that resonate with me.  One of the biggest myths out there is that you can't buy your own tarot deck and that it must be given to you.  Well, you are probably going to be waiting for a long time!  Years ago, I was told this by a friend who read tarot when I expressed how I wanted to learn and buy a deck.  I dropped many hints to many different people and months later I still had no deck.  So I went and purchased my first deck, which soon grew to me purchasing a new deck every fortnight.  I used to just buy exclusively tarot cards,  but I also started to buy oracle cards as well.  The artwork speaks to me and while I have some decks just to have them, others often rotate through my card-of-the-day board that I use.  There is no right or wrong way to collect tarot cards.  If you want to buy a deck just to have it, then go do it!  If you want to buy a new deck to read with, go get that!  Tarot is incredibly personal as it requires you to look within yourself, so you need to have some form of connection with the cards.  If it is just that you think the artwork is pretty or it is a themed deck from an indie artist or even a television show or classic movie that you like; if you feel that connection, treat yourself!  Below are some of the upcoming decks that I am personally really excited about!  (Scroll to the bottom if you want recommendations in other areas)

Rarely does a tarot deck make me scream out loud like this one did!  I have been obsessed with BTTF since I was a kid.  Many kids growing up in the 80s lived for this movie, and we have since passed the love down to our own kids.  One of the things that brought me so much joy a few years ago was the Playmobil BTTF advent calendar.  What better way to count down to Christmas than to get a piece of the movie each day to build a scene.  I thought nothing would top that. Well, I will always admit when I am wrong.  I am SO excited about this deck.  I probably don't really need to say any more!  If I can, I will absolutely try to stock this in my store!  Released by insight editions who recently did the Beetlejuice deck, I am really excited to see how they approach this.  The Beetlejuice deck was almost perfection so I have high expectations!

I was obsessed with this series when it came out.  It was witchy and there was literally an episode focused on Tarot which was one of the best episodes of television I have watched.  I got emotional at the end and I can't even tell you how many times I watched that episode.  I remember thinking, I hope someone makes an Agatha tarot using the imagery they presented.  Well they did!  Part of me is a littler hesitant because I don't know if they will be able to stretch it to a whole deck.  One of my pet peeves with pop culture decks is when the minor arcana is an afterthought and it is just generic images of swords or wands without including the story or characters.  I do fear this is what might happen in this case so I haven't yet pre ordered this one for my personal collection until I see more!

As you may or may not know, I am really big on supporting independent creators.  The people who don't have big publishing companies behind them and that are either hand making their cards or having to source their own printing just to make their dreams come true.  Indie decks are often more expensive because, again they don't have big publishing companies behind them.  I can assure you they aren't making bucketloads of money off these decks.  I don't mind paying more because not only am I supporting the creator directly, but you will also find it is a much different and more pleasing unboxing experience when you are buying directly from the creator.  A lot of effort goes into the packaging and how it is presented.  Often, they will give you snippets of their work, and you can just feel the love, passion and effort that has gone into making and boxing each and every deck.  I am not an affiliate and I do not receive free decks or any sort of payment for promoting these (they don't even know I have written about them), they are just decks that I think look pretty cool!

The Gothic Literature Tarot by SirianShadow

Inspiration: Step into the darkly enchanting world of gothic literature. This beautifully crafted tarot deck includes 78 intricately designed cards that encapsulate the essence of iconic gothic themes and characters, offering a unique and evocative reading experience. The major arcana showcases beloved figures from Gothic literature, each reimagined to embody key tarot archetypes with a haunting twist. The minor arcana replaces traditional suits with symbols that resonate with the genre: ravens, torches, chalices, and skulls. These fresh symbols reflect the mood and themes of gothic tales, providing new perspectives on classic tarot meanings.

Gothic and literature is two of my favourite things combined.  The imagery here is beautiful and I can see already that it tells a story and will be a deck that you can connect with deeply if this is your sort of thing.  The reviews say pretty much the same so this is one deck I have on my wishlist!

The Pulp Tarot by ToddAlcottGraphics

This project has been a very long time aborning. I've been interested in the Tarot as both an oracle and as a piece of design for decades. Back in the 1980s, I started to design a new deck, painting huge new images based on the artistic trends of the day. Soon, the enormity of the task overwhelmed me and I abandoned it. More recently, my visual art has been centered around creating new work based on midcentury designs, incorporating and manipulating existing images from 20th-century pop culture with an emphasis on the startling, dynamic paintings of classic pulp fiction covers. The Pulp Tarot expands upon that work, taking 70 years of pop-culture ephemera and putting it into a Photoshop Cuisinart to create a new Tarot deck that approaches the classic images of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck from the point of view of this modern cultural blender. Inspiration for the cards is drawn from everything from late 19th-century dime novels to 1970s exploitation movie posters, creating a rich, complex conversation between the arcane symbols of the Tarot and the sensationalist world of the pulps.

Given my love of pop culture, it shouldn't be any surprise why this has caught my eye.  I love the concept and it looks like a lot of heart and thought has gone into this, something that again is a benefit of supporting indie creators.

Well that is what I have my eye on this year!  I also want to give a special nods to these releases (I just didn't want the whole thing to be movie and TV references):

Mean Girls Tarot Deck and Guidebook

Wizard of Oz Tarot Deck and Guidebook

I know this has been very pop culture-centric edition, however I haven't been too excited by some of the other releases.  Tarot is highly personal and again it is what resonates with YOU.  I also love to support indie artists that aren't necessarily being stocked in book stores, so if you come across an amazing artist you think deserves to be shared, please do hit me up!

** I am not an amazon affiliate nor have I been asked to promote these.  They are just things that have caught my eye!
