Sovereign Hill Mines - Ballarat Victoria

On the 2nd of August 1851, the first published discovery of gold in the Ballarat region was broadcast (also known as Ballaarat back then). Soon the gold rush began and Ballarat was known internationally as a goldfield with an estimated 20000 prospectors coming to the area for their chance to find gold. Reaching it’s peak between 1852 and 1853, the average yield was 23000 oz of gold per week. By the early 1860’s, the gold rushes had ended and diggers moved onto the NSW, then QLD and finally WA.
