Paranormal Protection

To protect or not to protect. That is the question. Does it really help or is it only as good as your belief in it?

A topic which can sometimes be a controversial one is protection during a paranormal investigation. I’m not talking about wearing a hard hat or special steel capped boots (although in some particular locations, it’s probably not such a bad idea.). I’m talking about protection of the spiritual kind. I am also not really talking about getting touched, pushed scratched by a spirit or any sort of psychical attack. There is a type of attack that until you experience it, it is hard to explain and in some cases even believe to be true. I am talking about an attack on a spiritual level. Before you read on I want to stress I am by no means a medium, psychic, spiritualist, healer or any kind of expert that can claim to have legitimate knowledge in this area. This is my just my experiences and my opinion. Anyway here we go …..

So what exactly is a spiritual attack? It can be as simple as getting dizzy or sick, feeling emotions that are not your own, saying or doing things you wouldn’t normally do, becoming agitated right down to a full on possession where a spirit basically uses your body as a puppet. You are basically being influenced by an energy against your will (and in most cases you are unaware it is happening at first and need assistance and cleansing to come out of it). Unless you are channeling and have invited an entity it to use your energy etc, a spiritual attack is usually from a negative energy. Is it a demon? I personally don’t believe in demons (that’s a whole other post I will get to) but I do believe in some very nasty negative energies and have seen first hand (and experienced) what they can do to people.

Depending on your beliefs on spirits, your religion and just what you believe in general, everyone has a different opinion on this topic and it can become quite heated. There are a few different reasons as to why. First up, there are skeptics out there that don’t believe in spirits so therefore they obviously don’t believe that spiritual protection is necessary. Some people may think they are not sensitive or they are not a medium so there is no need for them to protect themselves. There of course is always an attitude ‘That’s not going to happen to me’. Some religious people use prayers to protect themselves and those who are not religious may think that praying to something they don’t believe in is pointless. Other reasons are that they think crystals/talismans don’t work, psychics are not real, visualisation is all in our head or the whole thing is a power of suggestion and you are not really under attack …… The arguments could go on for days.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer to this question as it depends on you and your beliefs. When I first started doing paranormal investigations, I certainly did not consider myself as a ‘sensitive’ person (I still don’t to be honest, I would say I’m open) and I knew nothing about protection. On my first investigation it was all a bit of a thrill but something that was a little surprising was being able to feel where energy in the room was. As I investigated more and more, strange things started happening to me. I would get sick, dizzy, confused and sometimes a weird mental image would pop up that I was convinced was my mind playing tricks on me. I would start seeing shadows and things I couldn’t explain and if someone else told me they saw what I was seeing, I would probably not have believed them. Sometimes I would go to a room I had been in many times before and be completely overwhelmed to the point where I could not enter the room, as if an invisible barrier was in the doorway. Other times, I would look in a direction and I could just feel there was something negative there and I couldn’t walk over there. I could be in a room and I wouldn’t be able to move or would just suddenly become weak and confused and I would need to leave and ground and regroup myself. I’m sure most paranormal investigators have experienced the same things in their years of investigating. I do believe the more you seek and the longer you do this, the more open you become and the chance for attack is increased.

A friend I investigate with would help me and started to teach me visualisation. Surrounding myself in a bubble of white light or white lighting an area that felt negative. She taught me about grounding and how to prepare during an investigation and how to stop something as it was happening to me. She also suggested I get a crystal to wear to protect myself. I bought a clear quartz pendant and wore it around my neck and I didn’t take it off……..Until one night when I did take it off and forgot to put it back on when I went off to an investigation. I thought it was a bit of nonsense at the time. A piece of rock was not going to protect me and visualising myself in white light was not going to do anything. I’m not going to go into detail about what happened, but I was not myself. Was it a coincidence that this event happened when I was laid bare and unprotected spiritually? Was I subconsciously thinking I was under attack because I didn’t have my ‘security blanket’ of a crystal? I don’t know …. It’s something I could never prove either way. It comes down again to what you believe.

So after this ‘experience’ I was warned that spiritual attacks and attachments are likely to occur again as I was more ‘open’ after this experience and obviously when I am seeking the paranormal, sometimes you find what you are looking for. This is true and they did happen again but they are personal experiences and not something I ever really tell a lot of people about. Why? It is personal. Quite honestly people would not believe it anyway. I know I am pretty skeptical when this kind of stuff happens to others. Why? Because if I am not experiencing the same thing I am just skeptical. It is human nature. When it does happen, it is something that happens to me when I am not expecting it and I usually need help. My 2 closest friends were either present or helped me with the aftermath and it will forever remain just between us. Again this is why you need to fully trust the people you investigate with. You can be vulnerable and bare and you need to trust these people can help you and will have your back. You can feel embarrassed, confused etc and these kinds of experiences do bring you closer and you develop a special bond that other people won’t necessarily understand (or maybe that’s just in my case because they are pretty special.)

Can the things that have happened to me all be explained and debunked? Yes absolutely I am sure there would be some sort of explanation for each occurrence and as an investigator I have to acknowledge that it could all be in my head. What makes me believe I was under attack and that it isn’t in my head? I just know. I have been with my brain for the last 33 years and I usually know when it is playing tricks on me. I know my body and my feelings and I know when something is not right. Not a very good response from an investigator but it’s how I feel. I would never go on the record with a personal experience as evidence of the paranormal and I don’t think anyone really could because at the end of the day it cannot be proven as anything more than a personal experience.

What I can tell you is that after my first experience I did throw myself into properly learning visualisation, grounding and shielding techniques which I personally find do help me during an investigation (and also to manage stress and anxiety in every day life). I embraced the world of crystals and use them daily and I even have a side business selling them with a friend.

The conclusion on this topic from my point of view is this…… We all have our own beliefs in different areas and protection is no different. We need to form our own view whilst respecting the view of another. If you don’t believe in a god, don’t hate on someone that uses prayer to protect themselves. If you think crystals are just rocks, that’s fine but others believe differently and swear by their energy and healing power so respect their choice. In terms of protection, do what is right for you. If it makes you feel comfortable and safe then go for it. If you don’t want to do protection because you don’t believe in it, that’s OK too.

There is of course the skeptical investigator side of me that tells me it is all in our head and that I could give someone a pen and tell them it protects us and if they believed it enough they would feel protected. Is it just our belief in something that makes us feel safe or protected or do these things really protect us? Are we really being attacked or is it all in our head? I know people who do all sorts of protection and have still been attacked, taken over or followed home. If this can still happen while you are protected then what is the point of protecting yourself? I don’t have the answer to any of this. What I do know is the things I have experienced and seen in my short paranormal career and exchanging experiences with other investigators confirms my personal belief that yes it happens and for that reason I do protect myself. I believe I have avoided potential attacks I can feel coming on by either protecting myself or removing myself from a situation and grounding myself.

In the end I know the preparation and protection I use works for me and makes me feel better so I’m going to stick with it whether it does anything or not and that is all that matters. I still try to be objective and debunk everything but at the end of the day, sometimes you just have to go with your gut.

2017 Update: I have not used any sort of paranormal protection in over a 12 month period. I have had a couple of interesting encounters but for the most part I have been just fine 'unprotected'. I think that your protection is only as good as your belief in it. Do what works for you. For now, using nothing is going fine for me, but who knows, I may have that one encounter that could completely change my mind again.
